Walt Disney Studios - 1952
Signed by over 60 Disney Employees who volunteered to create “We Like Ike” –
Notable signatures include Walt Disney, Milt Kahl, John Lounsbery, Eric Larson,
Wolfgang Rietterman, Ken Anderson, and many more including producer Bill
Anderson, and music writers Gil George and Paul Smith.
Walt Disney employees volunteered their time and energy in 1952 to create a 60
second and 20 second ad for Dwight Eisenhower's 1952 Presidential campaign. The
'52 campaign was the first US Presidential election to utilize Television
commercials, and Disney's "I Like Ike" ad was by far the most played
throughout the country and arguably the first Presidential Television Advertisement
in US history.
This landmark artifact of American,
Political, and Animation history exemplifies the Walt Disney studio’s mastery
of their craft utilizing clear and simple visuals paired with a catchy song in
order to get a compelling message or story across in a short amount of time.
According to Jim Korkis at Cartoon Research, there were total of 5 autographed
cel set-ups sent to members of Eisenhower's campaign after the election was
won, and at the moment, we are not aware of any of the other pieces having been
placed on the market.
This piece comes from the former estate of Jacqueline Cochran, who was
instrumental in both convincing Eisenhower to run for President, but also
connecting with Roy Disney on behalf of the campaign.
The mat contains over 60 signatures of the volunteers, including Walt Disney
and animators such as Milt Kahl, John Lounsbery, Eric Larson, Wolfgang
Rietterman, Ken Anderson.
The aperture measures 10" x 12.5"
The cel material is slightly wavy and attached to the background with tape, as
visible in the image. Overall, the artwork and the mat is in great condition.
