This is an amazing piece of animation history! Windsor McCay pioneered the field of animation with his short works Little Nemo and How a Mosquito Operates but he is possibly best known for his masterpiece Gertie the Dinosaur. McCay�s early works were not created with cels laid over backgrounds like traditional animation, rather he drew each drawing on translucent rice paper with India ink. As visible in the image, the artwork is affixed to a backing board with slight discoloration along the extreme upper and lower edges.
There is slight evidence of paper loss and tearing toward the extreme upper left corner, which can easily be matted out.
