This is an extremely early (quite literally ‘specimen’) depicting the Sorcerer’s Apprentice in a Record Storybook from JT Caldwell, who worked at Disney in the 1930s and early 1940s.

This is a set of 78 rpm records of the music (Sorcerer's Apprentice) along with a mock-up story and images hand painted on the divider pages, which as you can see, is roughly the story of the old master, the young apprentice, the well, and a lot of flooding. As evidenced by the Copyright Card which is included, this may be a physical example of what was submitted to the Copyright Office in 1933 with a hand-penned copyright notice of 1937. According to the Copyright registration card, the illustrations were by Corliss McGee.

The Bound cover measures 12.5" x 14" while the pages/record sleeves measure 11" x 13.5" The binding which holds the 78 records with the hand painted sleeves has separated from the hardbound cover. The painted pages are slightly wavy.

Paul Dukas composed "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" in 1897, based on a Goethe poem written nearly 100 years prior, telling the story that we are all familiar with today starring Mickey Mouse in his most famous role. This amazing, unique piece is a solid visual link between the story and the music and what we all know today as the Sorcerer's Apprentice as seen in Fantasia.

Before Jack Caldwell worked at Disney in the 1930s through the early 1940s, he worked with the Harman-Ising team which produced Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes from 1930-1933. You can view the digital image of Jack Caldwell, provided by the family (seen second from left) with the Harman-Ising production team, circa 1935 in the final image listed here. This photo was published in a July 1935 issue of MOTION PICTURE HERALD. Bill Hanna is at the head of the table, with Hugh Harman and Rudy Ising standing behind him; Carmen Maxwell is at the far left. This photo is not included with the artwork as it was lent by the family for reference.

This is one of the most unique conceptual pieces we've had in the gallery. Your chance to own a piece of Animation History Awaits!!
