Hemia Calpini Original Art
This is from a set of paintings on celluloid depicting Fairy Tales. This could be Jack and Jill or just about any other nursery rhyme featuring a boy and girl.
As per CartoonResearch.com, Hemia joined her brother Orestes as a set and background artist on Gulliver's Travels and the subsequent and final Fleischer feature Mr. Bug Goes to Town in 1941. Hemia was a fine painter whose silkscreen work is still available at auctions. Her work likely appears in the scene where the bugs gather the necessities for Honey's wedding in Mr. Bug Goes to Town.
Calpini treats this medium as it were fine art, painstakingly rendering these beautiful scenes which would be too time consuming in a production of an animated film. The decision to place the painted cel on top of the silk has likely preserved the paint all of these years.
The art board measures 18" x 14" while the cel measures 7.75" x 10"
The cel has fused to the backing fabric, which appears to be silk.
