Unknown Studio
12-Field (11" x 13")
While it is well known that Bill Watterson was opposed to any kind of licensing for Calvin and Hobbes, for a brief time he appeared to be amenable to the concept of animation as it would have offered artistic possibilities beyond the limitations of the page: https://web.archive.org/web/20110714012735/http://ignatz.brinkster.net/ccomicsjournal.html
It is our understanding that he decided against it mainly due to the amount of people he would need on his team to make it possible (he wanted to work alone), and the fact that translating the world of Calvin and Hobbes from the page to the screen would fundamentally alter the world of Calvin and Hobbes.
We believe that these are unreleased pre-production drawings likely used for a pitch to Watterson by the Bill Melendez studios, but we are unable to find any supporting evidence.
This is a unique opportunity to own art of these beloved characters.
These are not attributed to Bill Watterson.
There is evidence of some slight creasing and folding along the edges, particularly in the upper and lower edges, as well as in the corners, which could all be easily matted out. There is evidence of a tiny amount of paper loss in the upper right corner, as well as a tiny hairline tear in the rightmost peg-hole, both of which could be easily matted out. There is a tiny area of foxing to the far left of the character. There is evidence of some slight handling throughout which is not uncommon for production material of this kind.
