Production drawing of Gertie the dinosaur This is an amazing piece of animation history! Windsor McCay pioneered the field of animation with his short works Little Nemo and How a Mosquito Operates but he is possibly best known for his masterpiece Gertie the Dinosaur. McCay’s early works were not created with cels laid over backgrounds like traditional animation, rather he drew each drawing on translucent rice paper with India ink. This wonderful piece featuring Gertie as she swallows the stump of a tree in one big gulp is a fantastic example of McCay’s animation process. The drawing measures 6.75" x 8.5". As visible in the image, the artwork is affixed to a backing board with slight discoloration along the extreme upper and lower edges. There is slight evidence of paper loss and tearing toward the extreme upper left corner, which can easily be matted out. (unframed). OSDCS1 |

Master set-up of Gene Kelly Invitation to the Dance is a 1956 anthology film consisting of three distinct stories, all starring and directed by Gene Kelly. This cel from the third act, “Sinbad the Sailor”, features a live action Kelly with an animated dancer. The movie was filmed in 1952, but its release was delayed until 1956 because of doubts at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer about its commercial viability. The movie was a failure at the box office, but is regarded today as a landmark all-dance film. Gene Kelly's character is applied to the same cel as the dancer. The cels are attached to the background with staples along the upper edge, which is easily matted out. The size of this piece is 12 Field (11"x13") and the character size is 6" h x 8" w. (unframed).
