Production cel of Gertie the dinosaur This is an amazing piece of animation history! Windsor McCay pioneered the field of animation with his short works Little Nemo and How a Mosquito Operates but he is possibly best known for his masterpiece Gertie the Dinosaur. McCay’s early works were not created with cels laid over backgrounds like traditional animation, rather he drew each drawing on translucent rice paper with India ink. This wonderful piece featuring Gertie as she swallows the stump of a tree in one big gulp is a fantastic example of McCay’s animation process. The drawing measures 6.75" x 8.5". As visible in the image, the artwork is affixed to a backing board with slight discoloration along the extreme upper and lower edges. As is common with Gertie artwork, the paper is adhered to a backing board, in each corner and along the center top and bottom edge, which has caused slight discoloration.
