We are proud to present original production art from a series of animation segments created for Sesame Street. The cels were created the year after he died and were all overseen by the Haring Foundation who were very involved in all of the details including the paint colours and line detail, etc including insisting that the lines were hand-inked. These cels were based off of work Keith had previously done for children including children’s books and murals.
Keith Haring is hailed as one of the most influential 20th century American artists. His trademark pictographic imagery was inspired by a childhood immersed in Disney cartoons, comic books, and popular culture. The Keith Haring Foundation was established in 1989 to preserve the integrity of Haring's artwork and to continue his dedication to AIDS-related and children's charities.
Each cel is hand-inked by the animator, which is quite unusual for a 1991 production. The Haring Foundation was very particular about the quality of line produced, and required the animators to undergo stringent tests before markers were approved for production. There are a few pieces that have drawings with them, but these drawings were only used as guides. Remarkably, most of the work was animated directly onto the cel, without initial drawings.
