The Art of the

Picture Collection

The Hulton Getty Picture Collection is perhaps the world's greatest library of illustrative material. The cornerstone of Hulton Getty is the Picture Post collection. Hulton Getty became organized along commercial lines in 1947 following the creation of the Picture Post Library nine years previously. Sir Edward Hulton was a publisher famous for titles such as the above-mentioned Picture Post, and the library helped revolutionize newspapers and magazines in Britain and beyond. Between 1958 and 1988 the Hulton was part of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), during which time major press archives from the Daily Express and the London Evening Standard were acquired.

The BBC sold the Hulton in 1988 and the new owners set about doubling its size with the acquisition of the Keystone Collection, itself an amalgamation of the Keystone, Fox Photos, Central Press and the Three Lions press agencies. There are now over 18 million images in Hulton Getty which is actually made up of over three hundred separate collections. The archive begins with illustrations and engravings from the 14th century although its major strengths lie in its unparalleled collection from the years of 1840 through 1985.

What is a giclee and how do you say it? Giclee (j'clay) is a french word which means spray of ink. Because no screens are used, the prints have a higher apparent resolution than lithographs, more than four million droplets per second, and have the feel and luminosity of a watercolour.
