a Who
a Who animation Production Cel with Matching Drawing
  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel with matching drawing of a Who
Can a Who get a hand? This production cel with its matching drawing comes from the scene in the film in which Whoville is in shambles after being dropped from a great height. Time nearly ran out for this clocking cleaning Who but luckily he was able to hold on for dear life. A production cel of the worker adjusting the hands of the clock has been placed over a photocopy of the background. This inside look at the workings of the making of an animated film is a rare opportunity to understand and appreciate the complexity of the process.

Dr. Hoovey
Dr. Hoovey animation Production Cel with Matching Drawing
  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel with matching drawing of Dr. Hoovey
Who will believe Dr. Hoovey? Apparently no the rest of the Whos. The good doctor, much like Dr. Seuss himself, only looked to get people to believe. This production cel, layered over its matching drawing, is the perfect way to see the animation process come to life. Hoovey slumps back in front of his machine a little beaten but certainly not defeated. Together Hoovey and Horton would find a way to make a miracle happen.
Original background layout drawing by Maurice Noble of Dr. Whovy in his workshop in Whoville, accompanied by the matching production cel overlaid a reproduced copy of the layout drawing.
This character looks quite a bit like Chuck Jones with the hair and the glasses. Chuck Jones himself voiced the character of Dr. Hoovey as well as Horton and this set of drawings and cel is a fantastic set-up!

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Dr. Hoovey
This amazing production cel comes from the classic ending of the film in which the Doctor is confronted, suddenly with the same task as Horton. Hoovey hears a smaller civilization and now must protect them as Horton protected him!

Horton animation Production Cel
  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
Here Horton can be seen at the end of his rope. Literally. The other jungle creatures have seen fit to tie Horton up, trunk and all, and drag him into a bamboo cage. But despite the actions of his captors, Horton refuses to let go of the Who. Luckily brave Horton figures out a way to prove that the Who do exist and teaches us all that a person is a person, no matter how small.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
"Horton Holds a Flower!" may not have been such an interesting story, but luckily for us on that flower was a speck of dust, and in the speck was a civilization called the Who. Horton just happened to hear them and the rest as they say is history. This cel marks a bit of history itself, as it is one of first times that Horton hears the Who in the 1970 film adaptation of the classic Seuss story.

Horton animation Production Cel
  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
It is quite the force of nature when an elephant sneezes, especially with a trunk like Horton's. In this production cel Horton can be seen in full sneeze, an act that will send the Who into orbit. Horton rerescues his tiny friends but only to end up with even bigger problems.

Horton animation Production Cel
  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
Holding on until the very last, Horton will not abandon the Who even as the dreaded Wickersham brothers drag him closer and closer to the boiling Beezle-Nut oil. This production cel is a perfect example of how the styles of Chuck Jones and Dr. Seuss combined in the making of this animated classic. All the elements of Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations shine through, but the worried look on Horton’s face and the way in which his ears are tucked down is classic Chuck Jones.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
After spending hours picking all of the clovers in search of the Whos that the mean black bottomed bird dropped in a clover field, Horton hears his Who friends and rushes to their side! A great full body cel of Horton, this is one of the more magical moments in the film. It is also rare to see Horton in full stride as he is more often seen sitting or standing.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)

Horton Hears Achooo! This production cel comes right before a big sneeze from Horton the launches Whoville into a wild ride. Here Horton's face has all the tell tale signs of an elephant about to sneeze. The facial expressions also show the style of Chuck Jones mixing with the imagination of Dr. Seuss.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
Horton is the epitome of innocence and loyalty. In this production cel Horton can be seen holding his friends, the Who, while desperately trying to explain their existence to others. The expression on his face shows the heart that lays beneath. We should all hope to have friends as great as Horton.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
Horton was no fool. He knew just how to keep cool by splashing around in a jungle pool found in the middle of Nool. From the first scene of the movie, this production cel captures the essence of Horton, splashing around without a care. But it wouldn’t be long before Horton would start hearing things. Tiny little things called the Who, who would teach Horton and all of Nool that a person was a person no matter how small.

the Wickersham Brothers
the Wickersham Brothers animation Production Cel
  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of the Wickersham Brothers
In this production cel we see none other then the dreaded Wickersham Brothers. This trio of trouble weren’t monkeying around when they trapped Horton and tried to boil the helpless Who. Here the Wickershams are seen standing on each other’s shoulders as they sing their sinister song. Seeing all three brothers in one cel is certainly a treat even if their evil intentions make it a bit bittersweet.
