a bird
a bird animation Production Cel
  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of a bird
Gossip is for the birds, or at least it was in the 1970 animation of “Horton Hears a Who!” This colorful little creature, imagined by Dr. Seuss and animated by Chuck Jones, was flapping its gums just as much as it was its wings, spreading terrible rumors about our lovable hero Horton. This bird may have been a doo-doo but its colors were certainly brilliant and they pop right off of the blue background laid behind it. Coming from one of the many wonderful musical numbers in the film this piece has its own special significance.

Dr. Hoovey
Dr. Hoovey animation Production Cel
  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Dr. Hoovey
This is the funny twist at the end of the film where suddenly Dr. Hoovey, who was a member of the small speck of Whoville, finds a smaller speck much the same way Horton found them! Hoovey was actually voiced by Chuck Jones and was even drawn to look like the animation icon. Coming form the very last frames of the film, this production cel suggests that nothing ever really ends.
This character looks quite a bit like Chuck Jones with the hair and the glasses. Chuck Jones himself voiced the character of Dr. Hoovey as well as Horton.

Horton

Production cel of Horton
Could it be? A who on that little speck? Only this kind-hearted fellow with the big ears, big heart, and willingness to not only believe but make others believe in these tiny creatures could have saved them! It was Seuss hope that not only children would learn kindness from Horton, but also that major world powers would learn to listen to the voices of those whom with they shared the world.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
Horton was no fool. He knew just how to keep cool by splashing around in a jungle pool found in the middle of Nool. From the first scene of the movie, this production cel captures the essence of Horton, splashing around without a care. But it wouldn’t be long before Horton would start hearing things. Tiny little things called the Who, who would teach Horton and all of Nool that a person was a person no matter how small.

Up, up, up he goes in search of the Whos! This is a beautiful cel that shows there was no mountain high enough to keep Horton from helping his little friends. The story of Horton and his helpless Whos was one of Dr Suess' first social commentaries warning of the dangers of not listening to the little people.

Horton was no fool. He knew just how to keep cool by splashing around in a jungle pool found in the middle of Nool. From the first scene of the movie, this production cel captures the essence of Horton, splashing around without a care. But then Horton hears something. Here he is seen shielding his eyes with his trunk, trying to see what it was he heard. He'd have to look a little closer before he would realize that it was not what he heard, but Who.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton and a Wickersham brother
One of the Wickersham brothers is again up to no good, stealing Horton's flower and all of Whoville along with it. Horton is obviously upset but this monkey punk seems to delight in the elephant's dismay. Perhaps this is the way Dr. Seuss felt when he had been slighted by Hollywood in the past. Luckily for us, he trusted in Chuck Jones enough o bring this brilliant tale to life.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
Horton is the epitome of innocence and loyalty. In this production cel Horton can be seen holding his friends, the Who, while desperately trying to explain their existence to others. The expression on his face shows the heart that lays beneath. We should all hope to have friends as great as Horton.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
Here Horton can be seen at the end of his rope. Literally. The other jungle creatures have seen fit to tie Horton up, trunk and all, and drag him into a bamboo cage. But despite the actions of his captors, Horton refuses to let go of the Who. Luckily brave Horton figures out a way to prove that the Who do exist and teaches us all that a person is a person, no matter how small.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
Holding on until the very last, Horton will not abandon the Who even as the dreaded Wickersham brothers drag him closer and closer to the boiling Beezle-Nut oil. This production cel is a perfect example of how the styles of Chuck Jones and Dr. Seuss combined in the making of this animated classic. All the elements of Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations shine through, but the worried look on Horton’s face and the way in which his ears are tucked down are classic Chuck Jones.

  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Horton
Everyone knows elephants never forget but did you know that they could sweat? At least they do when they are under as much pressure as Horton. It is quite a responsibility guarding an entire civilization, even if it is a microscopic one, and Horton takes it very seriously. Horton's face shows the worry he feels over his new found friends as he navigates his way through the Jungle of Nool.

Jane
Jane animation Production Cel
  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of Jane and Junyer
Horton's hardest job was protecting the Who from this rather uppity kangaroo. Jane, and her little one, would stop at nothing in trying to ruin Horton and his Whos. This production cel shows Jane and Junyer hopping in to rain on Horton's parade. Who could guess that the voice of this snobbish kangaroo could be supplied by such a sweet lady, the incredibly talented June Foray.

The Wickersham Brothers
The Wickersham Brothers animation Production Cel
  Horton Hears a Who (1970)
Production cel of The Wickersham Brothers
They look rather sweet, but these brothers are mindlessly evil, doing the bidding of everyone's gossip, pulling Horton into his cage. A great example of all three Wickershams together, this production cel comes from the ultimate climax of the film, just before the Whos make themselves heard.
