Concept piece of Gremlin “The Gremlins” were mythical, mischievous creatures purported to wreak havoc on planes. Roald Dahl, who went on to write such classics as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach was a Flight Lieutenant who wrote this rare book and attempted to make a feature film with Walt Disney during World War II but they ran into several production Snafu’s such as Copyright and a cohesive direction in the film. Disney and his animators went on to make over a thousand insignias for use in the Air Force and Navy on patches and jackets, as this Gremlin is shown here. The size of the piece measures 15" x 9". Painting of a ghost This is an original painting on illustration board. We believe this to be from the WWII era, most likely intended for use by the Navy. The piece measures 10.5" x 8.5". As seen in the image, the board has a tinge of color change with some scattered stains along the bottom half of the piece and there are a few stain spots throughout. There is evidence of tape residue 0.5" thick with surface paper loss 3" long along the upper edge and slight tape residue at bottom edge. There appears to be a pin hole in the middle of the piece but does not pierce through the piece. The corners exhibit signs of wear and there is a 0.5" fold across the lower left corner. There are some imprints to the paper and black markings by the lower right corner. There are creases 1" and 1.5" long above the lower left corner and some minuscule specs of white paper residue in the character. Character drawing of Gremlin and Fifinella This is a very colorful and large drawing of these three characters. Gremlins was a film in development < during World War II but was never made.
