Concept piece of a skeleton This storyboard depicts a skeleton from Fantasia’s final sequence, Night on Bald Mountain. In this scene, Chernabog is calling forth the numerous ghouls, phantoms, and ghostly skeletons which are then brilliantly choreographed in an aerial dance set amongst the night sky. This piece is one truly inspirational storyboard. We get a nice up-close view at one of the dancing skeletons before the demon master banishes them back down to Hell. Concept piece of Ali Gator This is an excellent, early rendition of this slightly devilish character, and nicely sized as well. Here we see his great plume over his head, with what appears to be an earlier idea painted out by the artist. Ben is the leader of the horde of 12 wicked dance partners. He is shown here looking quite the dashing villain! This piece measures roughly 13" x 8.5". As visible in the image, the artwork has been trimmed roughly around the character and is mounted on a thicker card stock which has been trimmed as well. It is possible that this can be removed from the blue board. There is a small pin hole toward the lowered edge of the card stock, well outside the image area. The character size is 11" h x 7.5" w. Concept piece of Ben Ali Gator This is a concept design of the lead dancing alligator from the Dance of the Hours sequence, exquisitely rendered in pastels. The overall piece measures 10"H by 12"W and has a clear piece of acetate overlay to protect the art. The bottom right edge has the Walt Disney Productions ink stamp and the "WDP" stamp. Comes with the original label from the Courvoisier Galleries. There is a bit of pastel smearing along the contours of the drawing, due to handling during production. There are minute pin holes on each corner and there are two aged tape residues on the upper corners of the paper; these can be easily matted out for display or handling if desired. Concept piece of Hyacinth Hippo and Ali Gator This is a beautiful watercolor concept of ballet’s greatest animated couple. Here we see the unlikely pair in the throws of their complicated pas de deux. This piece is a fine example of the creative process that the characters and scenes go through before finally making it to the big screen. Ben Ali Gator’s feather is red in the concept and in the film it is actually blue, and Hyacinth loses her diaphanous headdress all together in the final draft. The artwork measures 9" x 10.5" while the image area measures 8" x 9.25". As is common with this type of artwork, there are pin holes in each extreme corner and in the center along the extreme top edge, all of which exist outside of the image area. The artwork exhibits delicate attention to detail in a cool gray-tone palette. There is a hauntingly voyeuristic quality to the piece, as we are granted a look into this lush retreat. The paper has had a tinge of color change around the outer edges only which can be easily matted out. There is evidence of staple holes towards the extremes of the upper left and right hand corners which can be easily matted out. As visible in the image, the extreme lower left corner has been slightly torn, which measures .75" and can easily be matted out as well. Concept piece of some mushrooms We estimate that this concept is an idea of the opening or closing scene of the Nutcracker Suite featuring the Mushrooms. Drawn in pastel on black animator's paper, it is a forest scene rendered in blues and blacks with the mushrooms highlighted in white, and serves as a very calm and dramatic scene. The dramatic effect of this concept of the Mushrooms from Fantasia is created by delicate strokes of pastels layered on black paper. The use of black drawing paper rather than white drawing paper helps exaggerate the places that the light strikes the dancing creatures. The aperture measures 7.5" x 10.25" while the matte measures 14" x 16.5". There is slight evidence of waviness along the lower portion of the drawing, but is visible only upon close examination. There may be evidence of slight water damage as well in this area, but it is difficult to assess if this is intentional or not for the artwork. There is a slight amount of paper loss outside of the image area which measures 1" x 7". There are a number of staple holes and pin holes in each corner. As pinning up storyboards for evaluation was often part of the creative process, this is fairly common for this type of work. US$ 2000 (matted).
