Original Animation Production Cels from 1950s-1960s


The Disney studio actively produced short cartoons on a regular basis until about 1956 when the frequency of these animated shorts dwindled. Donald and Goofy were the biggest stars. Important newcomers in this era were Chip & Dale, a pair of rascally chipmunks often pitted against Donald Duck in all sorts of adventures. During this time period, the classic Silly Symphony series was replaced by one-shot cartoons such as Lambert the Sheepish Lion.

This adorable coyote appeared in three Pluto shorts during the 1950s. He has such a cute expression! The entire viewing field measures 6" by 4.5". There is one staple in each corner of this piece. There is a crease that goes through the piece at character's waist, but has not affected the paint.

A fabulously uplifting piece of these two little scamps ready for adventure. Each character is full figured with wide, bright eyes and extremely happy, open mouths.

This unique Set-up pairs Goliath from the 1960 film "Goliath II" with a blue bird from Sleeping Beauty. As these pieces were made for tourists who visited Disneyland, the Disney team were more concerned with producing cute images than staying true to specific films, as this type of photocopy background, from Sleeping Beauty as well, was used with an array of characters from many different films.
The aperture measures 8" x 9.75" while the matte measures 12" x 14".
Cel has become slightly wavy which is fairly common for vintage animation cels. The light reflection is visible in the web image only and is not on the actual piece.

This cel appears on page 114 of the book by John Grant, "Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's Animated Characters." The cel set-up is on a laser print background.
There are staple holes approximately 3" from the top edge on either side, which can easily be matted out. There is paint loss in Donald's head as well as a can. Slight paint cracking can be seen in the white of Donald and very slight lifting and loss is in the ranger's boot and belt.

Mars and Beyond

Entire piece including matting measures 14"x11".
The signature is on the matting. There is some wrinkling/rippling throughout the cel which is characteristic of cels this age. There is a light scratch on the cel extending from the middle torso of the creature to the upper left side (diagonally). There is very minute paint wear on the "legs" of the Martian. The matting itself has some darkening of the edges and minute chipping can be found on the top outer edge, lower left inner edge, right outer-, and bottom edges of the matte.
