Courvoisier cel of Hop Low and some mushrooms.
Fantasia was among Disney's most ambitious projects, but the studio conquered it with all the mastery they are known for. This Courvoisier Cel comes from Fantasia's light-hearted take on The Chinese Dance, which utilized several dancing mushrooms, that were made to look like Chinese men with long robes and coolie hats. The smallest of these mushrooms, which can be seen in the lower left of this cel, was named Hop Low, and he had great deal of difficulty keeping in time with the dance. The humor in this scene centers around Hop Low's difficulties, but he has no trouble taking his bow at the end of the song. Looking closely at the cel, it is obvious that the animators worked hard to make these more than mere mushrooms, and the genius of Disney shines through. The artwork measures 10" x 11" while the frame measures 17.25" x 17.5".
