Fantasia (1940)
Concept piece of Some Mushrooms.

We estimate that this concept is an idea of the opening or closing scene of the Nutcracker Suite featuring the Mushrooms. Drawn in pastel on black animator's paper, it is a forest scene rendered in blues and blacks with the mushrooms highlighted in white, and serves as a very calm and dramatic scene.
The dramatic effect of this concept of the Mushrooms from Fantasia is created by delicate strokes of pastels layered on black paper. The use of black drawing paper rather than white drawing paper helps exaggerate the places that the light strikes the dancing creatures.
The aperture measures 7.5" x 10.25" while the matte measures 14" x 16.5".

There is slight evidence of waviness along the lower portion of the drawing, but is visible only upon close examination. There may be evidence of slight water damage as well in this area, but it is difficult to assess if this is intentional or not for the artwork.
There is a slight amount of paper loss outside of the image area which measures 1" x 7". There are a number of staple holes and pin holes in each corner. As pinning up storyboards for evaluation was often part of the creative process, this is fairly common for this type of work.
