Cinderella (1950) Concept piece of Cinderella. In this piece we see a highly stylized background consisting of several key elements. In the upper left, we see a black square grid placed against a larger deep blue square; this creates a lovely view of an evening sky from the inside of the palace foyer. The concepts from Cinderella retain much of the whimsy that Blair is known for and we can see examples of this in the surreal-like staircase which rolls and winds up into a tiny pink doorway--it almost looks as if one would use the stairs as a slide rather than a means to get from the bottom floor to the top. The staircase is also made stable by wonderfully ornate supports which only touch the stairs in two places, suggesting that the stairs are almost floating. In the scene we also see two fantastic potted plants that look anything but healthy. It’s possible that the health of these plants might personify Cinderella emotions as she scrubs the enormous and never-ending red and black checkered palace floor.
