Alice in Wonderland (1951)
Concept piece of ---.
What a wonderful concept! Here we see the appropriately decorated palace that belongs to the abrasive and brutish Queen of Hearts. The path to the castle is lined with heart-topped staffs which leads us to the wonderful red and black heart shaped door. The piece is demonstrative of Blair’s amazing use of color and stylization. With only a few strokes she has created a geometric interpretation of the land surrounding the castle. Through the viewers eye, the palace might remind us of the infamously unforgettable Kangaroo Trial, which shortly will take place within its walls. Much of Mary’s Alice art was based on the imagery and drawings of John Tenniel who was the illustrator for the original Carroll books. And, while Walt didn’t want them to go totally in that direction, the strong use of black and white throughout the Alice inspiration art is a reminder of her influence.
This piece measures 7" x 9". There is evidence of a pin hole towards the edge of each corner, outside of the image, which can be easily matted out..
