The Muppets Character drawing of Big Bird. Jim Henson is remembered as the most widely known American puppeteer in modern American television history. As creator of The Muppets, Henson was the leading force behind their continued run in the television series Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and films such as The Muppet Movie (1979) and The Dark Crystal (1982). Henson’s many achievements include an Oscar-nomination in film director, an Emmy Award in television production, and the foundation of The Jim Henson Company, the Jim Henson Foundation, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Among his many feats, he is best known for the creation of many memorable characters who taught us to read, count, and imagine. Big Bird continues to enjoy a career on Sesame Street and is perhaps the best example of Jim Henson’s distinct vision.
