Among Elves and Trolls (1926)

This gorgeous watercolor illustration is from the story “The Rat Catcher” featured in the 1926 edition of "Bland Tomtar och Troll" (Among Elves and Trolls). Tenggren illustrated this annual publication of Scandinavian Myths for a three year period where he contributed hundreds of drawings and several covers. Tenggren was originally hired because of his ability to mimic any style of art, particularly that of the publication’s original illustrator John Bauer. It was with "Bland Tomtar och Troll" that Tenggren gained a reputation for his ability to paint the fantastical creatures of children’s fairy stories—a skill that would pay off in spades when, later at Disney, he began work on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio.
The artwork measures 8.5" x 7" while the frame measures 19.5" x 18".
